Yukio Akamine — Fashion Documentary, Tokyo

The brief

We met Yukio Akamine while working on other projects and found him an extraordinary person. Born in Tokyo in 1944, he founded his first brand, WAY-OUT, in 1972 and today leads the tailoring label Akamine Royal Line. He advises fashion companies and retailers across Japan and is respected by menswear insiders worldwide — he has been to Italy more than 300 times and attended Pitti Uomo since its early years. We wanted to find out who he really is: his influences, his history and his way of thinking.

How we produced it

A self-commissioned documentary shot in Tokyo with a deliberately small crew — a director/DOP and one camera assistant — so the interview felt like a conversation rather than a production.

What we delivered

A 6-minute fashion documentary (2020).
