Three prefectures in western Japan, Tottori, Hyogo and Tokushima, wanted to reach international travellers. Working with JTB and Tokyo agency Shiitake Creative, we produced a set of inbound tourism films that take visitors beyond the usual routes. Over seven days on the road, this tourism video production covered temples, mountains, countryside cycling routes and heritage sites. We cut long and short films for each prefecture, and a combined film for all three.
The brief
The audience was international visitors planning a trip to Japan. Each prefecture needed its own film, and the three together needed one combined story.
How we produced it
We flew into Tottori and covered the rest of a busy itinerary by car. In Tottori we filmed Nageiredo on Mount Mitoku, a temple hall built into a sheer cliff face. In Hyogo we filmed cycling routes through the countryside of the Seidan area, and in Tokushima we travelled into the quieter south of the prefecture. We applied for and received drone permission at many of the locations, several of them sites of great cultural heritage. When travel between locations brought good light, we filmed that too.
The crew was deliberately small: a producer, director/DOP Andrew Goldie, an assistant and one model. That meant we could reach more places in a day. On the road we took part in local experiences most visitors never get to try, and learned a great deal about each region's history and culture. That kind of time spent across Japan is what we bring to every regional shoot.
What we delivered
For each prefecture we delivered a long film and a short film, plus a long and a short film combining all three. All three prefectures, and JTB, were very happy with the result.
