Kenta Toshima is a VR therapist who uses virtual reality to give older and disabled people experiences they could not otherwise have. For Meta's Community Voices channel, we directed and shot a short documentary about his work, filming at the University of Tokyo and on location near Hiroshima. It is an example of the branded documentary production in Japan that we love most: a real person with a good idea, told in his own words.
How we produced it
A local producer brought in director/DOP Andrew Goldie to direct and shoot the film, working directly with the people from Meta who joined the shoot. We filmed at the University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, where Kenta has worked, and then travelled to a location near Hiroshima.
The interviews were in Japanese, so everyone could speak naturally. Our approach with interviewees is always the same: a calm, friendly set and plenty of time, so people feel comfortable in front of the camera.
What we delivered
We directed and shot the documentary, which Meta published on its platforms as part of the Community Voices series.
