KPMG Sustainability Documentary β€” Japan Leg, Tokyo

A London production company, working for KPMG, hired us to film the Japan leg of a documentary on sustainability and the new economy. It follows a KPMG director making the case that sustainability matters to a company's bottom line. Over four days in and around Tokyo we filmed around eight interviews with global CEOs, walk-and-talks at a sustainability workshop, and B-roll across the city. It shows how our corporate documentary production in Tokyo works around a live event.

How we produced it

Days one and two. We filmed about eight interviews, scheduled around a live international conference. We booked a large meeting room just down the corridor, so executives could step out, give their interview and be back in their session within minutes. With an iDirect eye-line system, each interviewee speaks straight to camera. Director/DOP Andrew Goldie usually asked the questions through the iDirect while keeping eye contact. KPMG set the questions, and the KPMG director added his own where he felt it mattered.

Day three. We joined conference attendees at a sustainability workshop at a farm and ecological centre on the outskirts of Tokyo. Using the DJI Ronin 4D, we filmed a series of uninterrupted walk-and-talks between the KPMG director and the attendees he had chosen. The camera stayed smooth and cinematic across a large site, and the conversations felt natural.

Day four. B-roll of the KPMG director at dramatic architectural locations around Tokyo. Our producer and fixer secured permission for each one, and a crew van and driver kept the day moving.

Working for a London team with international executives on a Japanese site takes careful communication in both languages. We made sure the hotel, the venues and the interviewees knew exactly what was happening and when.
